In Short:

Google recently unveiled the Pixel 9 series, which includes the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, Pro XL, and Pro Fold. The upcoming Pixel 9a, expected between March and May 2024, will use a modified version of the Tensor G4 chip and an older Exynos modem from the Pixel 8 series. It may have a new design, aimed at being the most affordable option in the lineup.

Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold were recently unveiled at the Google Made By Google event. The latest Pixel series operates on the company’s proprietary Tensor G4 SoC in conjunction with the Titan M2 security chip. According to a recent report, Google plans to utilize the same Tensor G4 SoC for the forthcoming Pixel 9a, although it may be paired with an older Exynos modem, specifically the one used in the Pixel 8 lineup. The anticipated launch window for the Pixel 9a is projected to be between March and May of next year, making it the most budget-friendly offering in the Pixel 9 family.

Pixel 9a to Feature Tensor G4 Chip

A report by Android Authority claims that the Pixel 9a will operate on a variant of the Tensor G4 SoC differing from that of the Pixel 9 series. This device, with the code name “tegu”, is expected to incorporate the Exynos 5300 modem, previously utilized in the Pixel 8 lineup. In contrast, the Pixel 9 series employs the new Exynos Modem 5400, which supports Satellite SOS.

While the silicon die for the Tensor G4 is expected to remain unchanged from the Pixel 9 series to the Pixel 9a, the packaging is anticipated to differ. Similar to its predecessor, the Pixel 8a, the upcoming Pixel 9a is projected to utilize IPoP (Integrated Package on Package). Conversely, the standard Tensor G4 employs FOPLP (Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging). As per Samsung, the IPoP packaging is thicker and produces greater heat than FOPLP but offers a lower manufacturing cost.

By minimizing expenses on the modem, it is likely that Google will price the Pixel 9a at a similar or lower price point compared to its predecessors.

Furthermore, a recent leak indicates that the Pixel 9a will showcase a significantly different design from its older A-series counterparts and the Pixel 9 series. A redesigned rear panel is anticipated, with a debut expected between March and May of the upcoming year.
