Total telephone subscription dipped in May: Telecom regulator

Hit by lower subscriptions in urban areas, the total number of telephone users in India declined from 1,059.29 million at the end of April 2016 to 1,058.03 million at the end of May 2016, showing a monthly fall in growth rate of 0.12%, official data published by the sector regulator showed here on Friday.

Telecom operators to shell out Rs. 1 lakh cr. for spectrum : Crisil

India’s telecom operators are likely to fork out about Rs.1 trillion (Rs.1 lakh crore) to buy spectrum at the upcoming auctions, according to Crisil. The rating agency added that of this, nearly 75 per cent would be spent by private telecom operators.

The Indian telecom watchdog on Thursday floated a consultation paper in an effort to explore transparent models that can achieve benefits of free data. The paper asks whether free data can be provided to users without violating its previous order that banned discriminatory pricing for some content and websites.

Mobile phones to come with panic button from 2017

All mobile handsets sold in India from January 2017 will have to feature a panic button that will allow women in distress to seek help. In addition, from January 2018, all mobile phones must have an inbuilt GPS to identify the handset user’s location, according to a notification of the Department of Telecommunications.
